Steve Nagle

Steve at IronmanHead Honcho

It was 1977. Jimmy Carter became President of the United States, the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup and Steve Nagle became a fitness instructor at the YMCA in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Five years later, Steve moved to Campbell River, where he became a BCRPA certified Personal Trainer and established the extremely successful Sportfit fitness class. For over 25 years, Steve has been motivating the residents of Campbell River to get up, get out and get active!

This guy is passionate about fitness and health.  Steve has the ability to motivate others to live a healthier lifestyle and improve their quality of life.  He believes that personal fitness should not be tied to fancy equipment or limited by facility schedules.  Fitness should be simple and adaptable and should fit into everyone’s daily life.

Steve not only talks the walk, he walks the walk. Or runs the run. Steve started running in 1974 and has completed several marathons.  In 1997 he took up the challenging sport of triathlon and has now completed five Ironman Competitions. In addition to running and triathlon, Steve loves to snowboard, mountain bike, hike and scuba dive.  His strong and diverse background in outdoor activities gives him the ability and knowledge to train clients in many different sports.

With decades of experience and an inexplicable amount of energy, Steve can help you gear up to get outside and push your body to the limit!

Dan Clements

All work and no beer make dan....Head Mechanic

As a young lad, Dan played lacrosse and ran track (1500M, mile and 3000M). He took up cycling shortly after high school. In those days, there were no "mountain bikes", just 10 speed road racing bicycles. Dan rode mostly for fitness and to feel the wind through his hair. In 1987, he caught the triathlon bug, competing in numerous races including an Ironman in 1988. Somewhere between running, swimming and cycling, Dan discovered mountain biking. The beckoned to him and mountain bike racing became his focus for many years. His appetite was not satiated by racing, so Dan began to organized many events including the Tread & Tread Off-Road Duathalon in 1988, the Stickman Off-Road Triathlon in the nineties and Allterraman Off-Road Triathlon in the 2000's. You can also thank Dan for numerous Cycle Club Mountain Bike Time Trials, the 12 Hours of Phat Fun Run and the Slug Slam BC Cup (over 350 participants, including Ryder Hesjendal!) These days, Dan focuses his organizing talents on the Campbell River 50K Trail Challenge, an event for runners and riders. Dan still participates himself in the occasional 'fun' race and adventure race.

Dan and his better half, Sue, are responsible for the first "real" mountain bike trails in the Campbell River area, which eventually became known as "The Pump House Trails". He was actively involved in the initial building of the ever-growing Snowden trail network.

Dan began his wrenching career while he working at Performance Bikes in Victoria. You may recognize him as the owner and head mechanic of Urban Lemming Cycle Sports. In 2004, Dan sold the shop, but continued to work at Island Mountain Sports for another couple years as head mechanic.

Christine Portmann

Ocean to Alpine AdventurCamp 1er

Born and raised in Campbell River and born and raised to be active! Being active in the outdoors is what Christine loves best. Let's just say, she is “addicted to the outdoors”. From ski touring in the Norwegian Alps to mountain biking in East Africa to paddling at home right here on the west coast, Christine is always up for an adventure. Seeking the wild in wild places is one of the passions that keeps life exciting for this gal. For a more relaxing time, CP loves to spend time hanging out with her Swiss Bernese Mountain Dog, Chilco.

Her Swiss ancestry and the travel bug have allowed Christine to learn a few languages. So, if you’re a foreigner looking for some outdoor equipment or just looking for advice on where to go and what to see, come on into our store and see Christine. Although she has lived abroad and in other parts of B.C., she has always been drawn back to our coastal mountain paradise. After years of calling Campbell River home and over ten years co-owning and operating Spirit of the West Adventures Ltd., a sea kayak tour & rental company, Christine has a deep knowledge of this area and the outdoor adventure industry.

Let Christine share some of her outdoor addictions with you! Being a sea kayaker, mountain climber, skier, snowshoer, hiker, biker, runner and swimmer, Christine will be able to set you up with all the outdoor gear you need!

Jess Lathrop

SSWC2009 Training at Nymph FallsBikes and Fashions

Jess recently joined the Campbell River community when she moved here from Durango, Colorado, where she raced bikes on her college's varisty team (road, mountain, track and cyclocross), studied biology, climbed mountains, backcountry skied, worked as a trail crew leader, built a zip-line course, guided tours on said zip-line course, and well, squeezed about as much 'outside' into everyday as she possibly could! While living in the Southwest, she took time to run to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back (in around 5 hours), solo 11 peaks over 14,000 feet, survive a helicopter crash, wear two National Collegiate Mountain Bike Championship jerseys and race the 2009 SingleSpeed World Championships. She also has years of experience in the retail side of the bike industry and certainly knows her way around a dandyhorse!

Although she's new to town, you may recognize Jess as the tall, loud girl who rode her singlespeed mountain bike for twelve hours straight (while polishing off a six pack of Guiness) at the 2009 12 Hours of Cumberland. You may also have met her at Mt. Washington this summer, where she spent her free time rallying her downhill bike and cracking fullface helmets. If you can't find Jess riding a bike, you may find her telemarking at Mt. Cain, climbing at the Nanaimo River Crags or exploring the extensive backcountry of Strathcona Park with her mutt, Kona.

Jess is thrilled to be a part of the Outdoor Addictions crew. She is excited to get more Campbell Riverites active and outside.

Jess' motto for life: If you ain't bailing, you ain't wailing.
